Injectable microparticles are typically 100 micrometers or less in diameter, and can release peptides, small molecules, proteins and nucleic acids for days, weeks or months following a single parenteral administration. Many microencapsulated drug substances are high-potency compounds.
Drug delivery can be systemic (e.g. subcutaneous or intramuscular) or local. Local applications include delivery to the brain, joints, bone and the eye. Injectable microparticles can be prepared by solidifying emulsions through solvent evaporation or solvent extraction, phase separation or spray drying.
Evonik's injectable microparticles – made using proprietary FormEZE™ processing – can be injected with 27-G needles or smaller. Furthermore, up to five times more microencapsulated drug can be administered compared to conventional microparticle products, facilitating microencapsulation of less potent drugs, and enabling the delivery of substances for longer periods.
