Bioresorbable polymers

RESOMER® bioresorbable polymers for medical devices

Bioresorbable implant devices made better

The RESOMER® portfolio of bioresorbable polymers has earned a strong track record for efficacy, biocompatibility, safety and supply security over more than 30 years of commercial use. This portfolio of semi-crystalline and amorphous polymers are available in a range of standard and customizable forms to provide maximum versatility in the development of innovative bioresorbable devices.

In addition to the development and supply of biomaterials for orthopedic devices such as interference screws, suture anchors and fracture plates, Evonik also offers specific materials for cardiovascular devices such as vascular closures and vascular stents; for wound healing applications such as sutures and ligating clips; and other applications including dental membranes and tissue engineering scaffolds.

Some of the many advantages of RESOMER® include:

  • robust quality and safety data
  • wide range of degradation profiles
  • tailorable mechanical properties
  • easy processing
  • stable after sterilization

Bioresorbable polymers for 3D printed medical device implants

Evonik recently launched RESOMER® Filaments, a series of different grades of enabling bioresorbable materials ideal for higher resolution printing with Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technology.

RESOMER® Filaments provide mechanical properties and degradation rate profiles that can be precisely tuned to match target applications. Whether your target application requires high strength and modulus or flexibility and elongation, the portfolio has the versatility to address specific requirements. Bioresorbable PLA-PEG triblock copolymers

RESOMER® PLA-PEG copolymers combine the hydrophobic (water repelling) properties of polylactide (PLA) polymers with the hydrophilic (water attractant) properties of polyethylene glycol (PEG). As triblock copolymers, the portfolio can replicate the mechanical strength of standard RESOMER® polymers while enabling degradation rates up to six times faster.

RESOMER® PEG copolymers are designed to enhance device performance and accelerate patient healing for wound closure, paediatric and other applications. They are purified for low residual monomer content and are compatible with all relevant technologies including extrusion, compression and injection molding.
